The Roman Policy of ââ¬ÅBread and Circusesââ¬Â free essay sample
Question Number One There were several problems created through the Roman policy of ââ¬Å"Bread and Circuses. â⬠As Romeââ¬â¢s political system evolved, Romeââ¬â¢s armiesââ¬â¢ expanded the Roman power across Italy. After getting rid of their Etruscan rulers, Romans gained power over central Italy. By about 270 B. C. , Rome occupied all of Italy. Romeââ¬â¢s success was partly because of its efficient, well-disciplined army. The Roman armies were made up of citizen-soldiers who fought without any pay, and supplied their own weapons. The basic unit was called the Roman legion. The Roman legion was made up of about 5,000 men. The Roman soldiers had a series of great victories. Young soldiers who showed courage, got praise and gifts, but those who fled from battle, were put to death. People had to acknowledge Roman leadership, pay taxes, and supply soldiers for the Roman army. Rome treated the defeated enemies with justice, because in return they got to keep their own customs, local government, and money. Only a few of the conquered people were ever granted full citizenship from Rome. Most of them became partial citizens, who were allowed to marry Romans and carry on trade through the growing city on the Tiber. Rome fought three wars against Carthage between 264 B. C. and 164 B. C. Those wars were called the Punic Wars. In the first Punic war, Rome defeated Carthage, which forced it to surrender Sicily, Corsica, and Sardina. Carthage had tensions about seeking revenge, and 23 years later, Carthage lead by Hannibal, sought revenge. Hannibal dedicated his life to destructing Rome. Hannibal was selected to be the leader of the Carthaginian army, and had a force of troops from North Africa, and Europe. During 218 B. C. , Hannibal set out from Spain and led his troops and war elephants into Italy. In the Second Punic War, the Romans sent an army to attack Carthage. Carthage gave up all its land except for the land in Africa. For the Romans, the most important result of the Second Punic War was that they were now masters of the western Mediterranean. Hannibal fled to the East, but once Romans tracked him down, he took poison, rather than surrendering to his enemy. In the Third Punic War, Hannibal was dead and Rome still saw Carthage as a rival because of the destruction that Hannibalââ¬â¢s army had brought to Italy. In the end, the survivors of the city that Rome had attacked, were either killed or sold into slavery. Rome had a series of wars that brought Macedonia, parts of Asia Minor, and Greece under its rule, while other regions including Egypt, had allied with Rome. The widespread of slave labor hurt small farmers, because they were unable to produce food as cheaply as the wealthy families could. Many farmers fell in debt, which resulted in them being forced to sell their land. The landless farmers then went to Rome in search for jobs. Tiberius called on the state to tribute land to poor farmers, and Gaius, who was elected tribune 10 years later than Tiberius was, went for a wider range of reforms, including the use of public funds to buy grain for the poor who were hungry. The reforms of Tiberius and Gaius angered the senate, and were seen as a threat to its power. The killing of Tiberius, Gaius, and their followers, showed how the republic was unable to resolve its problems in peace. Over the next 200 years, Rome became involved in a series of civil wars. The senate wanted to govern the same way they have in the past, but the political leaders wanted to weaken the senate. The series of civil wars in Rome were about whether the senate or political leaders should have power. These wars caused slave uprisings and revolts against Roman allies, as well as transforming old legions of citizen soldiers into more organized armies. All Romans, rich and poor, enjoyed entertainments at the Circus Maximus, (shown in the first picture. ) The Circus Maximus was built in 326 B. C. , in Rome, with a purpose of controlling the cityââ¬â¢s mobs. The government also provided free grain to the poor. The Colosseum (in the second picture) was also built in the Roman Empire with a purpose of entertainment as well. Question Number Two How the Romans built a world empire begins with the land they lived in, and how the ability of resources affected Romeââ¬â¢s development as an Empire. Rome began as a small city-state in Italy. Italy is a peninsula centrally located in the Mediterranean, and Rome is located in the center of Italy. The location helped the Romans as they expanded into Italy and lands around the Mediterranean. Italy has the advantage of the Apennine Mountains along the Italian Peninsula, unlike Greece, which has small broken up valleys. Italyââ¬â¢s geography also has the advantage of broad, fertile plains, both in the North, under the Alps, and in the west, where Romans settled. The plains supported growing populations. The Romans shared the Italian Peninsula with other people, and adapted from some of those peopleââ¬â¢s ideas. Those people included Greek colonists, and the Etruscans. The Etruscans lived north of Rome and were the greatest influence on the Romans. The Etruscans ruled most of central Italy, and Rome, and helped Romans learn the alphabet that they had earlier learned from the Greeks. They also learned engineering techniques to drain the lands along the Tiber, and how to use the arch in building. Between 509 B. C. and 133 B. C. , Rome changed its republican form of government to meet the changing needs. Romans also developed the military power to conquer Italy and the entire Mediterranean. Question Number Three Julius Caesar has a huge role in Romeââ¬â¢s switch from a democracy to a dictatorship. Julius Caesar was a commander who combined ambition with determination to make drastic reforms. Julius Caesar dominated Roman politics with Pompey. Pompey was one of Romeââ¬â¢s most brilliant and greatest generals. During 59 B. C. , Caesar set out with his army to make new conquests. After years of continuous fighting, Caesar successfully brought all of Gaul under Roman control. Pompey became jealous of Caesarââ¬â¢s fame and success. Therefore, Pompey had the senate order Caesar to leave his army and return to Rome. Instead, Caesar committed treason by secretly leading his army into northern Italy and heading towards Rome, which lead to more civil war outbreaks across the empire. Caesar crushed Pompey and his supporters, and strengthened Roman power. After Caesar returned to Rome, he forced the senate to make him a dictator. Caesar was the absolute ruler of Rome, even though he still kept the senate and other republic features. Caesar employed the jobless, gave public land to the poor, reorganized the government of the provinces and granted Roman citizenship to more people. Caesarââ¬â¢s enemies were worried that he was planning on making himself the king of Rome. In order to save the republic, Caesarââ¬â¢s enemies plotted against him. On the Ides of March (March 15th), as Caesar arrived in the senate, his enemies stabbed him to death. The death of Julius Caesar, lead to new civil wars. Mark Anthony was Caesarââ¬â¢s chief general and Octavian was Caesarââ¬â¢s grandnephew. After Caesarââ¬â¢s death, Mark Anthony and Octavian joined forces to hunt down whoever murdered Caesar. In 31 B. C. , Octavian defeated Anthony and his powerful ally Cleopatra, who was Queen of Egypt. The 200-year span that began with Augustus and ended with Marcus Aurelius, was known as the time of the Pax Romana. The Pax Romana was a time when Roman rule brought peace, unity, and order to the lands from the Euphrates River in the east, to Britain in the west. Question Number Four Christianity was a new religion, early in the Pax Romana. At first, Christianity was just only one of the several religions being practiced in the empire. By 392 A. D. , Christianity had been declared as the official religion in the Roman Empire. When the Roman Empire fell, Christianity took over and reshaped Roman beliefs. The Romans and other citizens of the empire accepted the Jewââ¬â¢s religion and even excused the Jewââ¬â¢s from worshiping Roman gods. Jews believed that a messiah sent by God, would appear and lead the Jewish people towards freedom. During the Hellenistic age, many of the Jews learned Greek customs and ideas. Zealots were known as other Jews, who had a different mission. The Zealots mission was to call on Jews to revolt against Rome and reestablish an independent Israel. Around about 4 B. C. , a Jew named Jesus was born in Bethlehem, near Jerusalem. As a young man, Jesus worked as a carpenter, worshiped God and followed the Jewish law. Jesusââ¬â¢ teachings were based on Jewish tradition, believing in one God, and accepting the Ten Commandments. Jesus declared himself as the messiah and Son of God. Jesus preached forgiveness. To the Roman authorities, Jesus was someone who might lead the Jews in a rebellion against Roman rule. After Jesus was arrested by the Romans, and was condemned to be crucified, Jesusââ¬â¢ disciples say that Jesus rose from the dead and commanded them to spread the message. Jesusââ¬â¢ disciples preached among the Jews of Judea, while others preached among Rome. The few Jews, who accepted that Jesus was the messiah, were known as the first Christians. Paul was a Jew from Asia Minor, who began the wider spread of Christianity. Although Paul had never seen Jesus, he decided to spread Jesusââ¬â¢ teachings beyond just the Jewish communities. Paulââ¬â¢s spread of Jesusââ¬â¢ teachings helped Christianity become a world religion. Over the centuries, thousands of Christians became martyrs. Martyrs were people who suffered of died for their beliefs. Paul was killed as a martyr.

7 LESSONS FROM MY TIME AT HBS
My MBA at Harvard Business School (HBS) is over, but I will harbor memories from my two years there for a long time. I had some incredible experiences, met inspiring friends and professionals, visited fascinating places and last but not least reflected a lot. It has been a transformational experience not only professionally and academically but especially personally. As I embark to go back to what MBA students usually call real life (vs. bubble MBA life), these are the seven key lessons I plan to take with me. 1. Prioritize ruthlessly As most MBA students learn, especially during the first weeks at business school, the academic, social, and professional activities are so plentiful that it becomes unfeasible to participate in each and every one. It would be great to do them all, but that is not possible. The solution is not easy: learn to say ââ¬Ënoââ¬â¢, or as a famous poster shown in my office used to say you need ââ¬Ëruthless prioritizationââ¬â¢. During business school, I learnt to focus on questions like how to prioritize my time, what matters most to me, what is important but not a priority, and to spend my time purposefully. Also post-MBA, I have planned to spend weekly time reflecting on whether I am devoting the right amount of time to the activities and people that matter most to me. 2. Be yourself During my time at HBS, there were some moments where students shared some very personal stories from their past. Several students cried in front of large crowds. They opened themselves up. They became so vulnerable. At first, I was surprised how they were willing to share their deeper selves. Afterwards, I felt much more connected and closer to them. I felt that they had removed all barriers. They were so authentic. I will not be afraid to show my emotions and who I am. I will not be afraid to also show my weaknesses. I am confident that this is the only way I will be able to be myself. Some people will like it, others will not. However, at least, they will know me for who I am and not someone else. 3. Be patient and persistent I spent two years applying to HBS. The first time I was rejected and HBS did not even call me for an interview. Had I not been patient, I would not have had the privilege to live such a great experience. The second time I applied, I reflected a lot about the reasons I was rejected and I tried to improve my application as much as I could. It took lots of efforts, time, energy, and patience. If I think about the achievements I am most proud of, I can easily realize that they took time, persistence, and lots of failures. Sometimes we want to have something immediately and I am that type of a person. But that is not always possible. Post-MBA, I want to continue being patient for the things I care the most. 4. Just ask How many times do you get tempted to ask for something but you do not, due to a fear of rejection? How many times have you wanted to connect with someone but you are unable to do so because you are afraid? How many times have you missed an opportunity because you were shy? It happened to me many times both at work and in my personal life. During a sales class at HBS, a Professor pushed us to just ask in order to overcome our fear of being rejected. He suggested that we connect with people we would not have been comfortable reaching out to. That week, whenever I met someone I wanted to talk with, I approached him/her. Sometimes, I was rejected. However, I was surprised my requests were accepted many more times than I thought. That boosted a tremendous volume of confidence. Post-MBA, I do not want to be shy nor afraid of being rejected. Opportunities arise when weââ¬â¢re brave enough to seek them out. 5. Seek out diversity At HBS you are often asked to work as a team. HBS students tend to be fairly opinionated and their opinions tend to be very different. During group work I was initially certain my way of thinking was the right one. Yet at the end of the project, I realized often that a specific point I had not understood led the project to new directions and ways of thinking. Post-MBA I will seek out diverse points of view both at work and in my personal life. Working in a diverse environment requires lots of flexibility and patience to understand different points of view and adapt to various ways of thinking, interacting, and communicating. However, I cannot emphasize enough how much being in a diverse environment has taught me about myself and about other cultures. 6. Be grateful Graduation day is a day I will never forget in my life. I was very proud of myself on that day. But even more, I felt very grateful. I felt grateful towards my family. I felt grateful towards so many people who had filled me with continuous affection and support. I felt grateful towards HBS as an institution allowing me to live such a transformational experience. I want to continue manifesting my gratitude towards people and institutions that have given me so much. And even more, I would really like to start impacting the lives of people in a positive way as a tribute to the many people who helped me get where I am today. 7. Dream big and take risks ââ¬Å"I want to create a firm that allows space travels.â⬠ââ¬Å"I want to help in reducing famine in African countries.â⬠ââ¬Å"I want to revolutionize the way education works.â⬠I have never been in a place where people thought as big as they did at Harvard. They had dreams that are very hard to realize. Yet these are their dreams and they are willing to invest lots of time and energy fulfilling them. They are willing to take risks. Post-MBA I want to dream big and take risks. Taking risks can be pretty daunting. However, not taking risks signifies renouncing your dreams, which would be far worse. **** Now that Iââ¬â¢ve graduated from HBS, I hope to continue to apply these lessons in my daily life. And I hope theyââ¬â¢ll be helpful to anyone considering applying to Harvard Business School.

Of Human Bondage essays
Of Human Bondage essays Family, love, and friendships are a few of the many colorful threads that are taken and woven into a tapestry of life. Every person one meets on the way will influence the patterns of that tapestry. Every incident, be it tragic or cheerful, will guide the shuttle to take on new directions. With this in mind, William Somerset Maughams autobiographical novel Of Human Bondage offers the reader a first person perspective on the first thirty years of a young mans life. Philip Carey was born with a clubbed-foot. Many critics believe that this birth defect paralleled Maughams own trouble with stammering. This handicap acted as a basis for all the anxiety and self-consciousness that shadowed Philips life. As readers, we shadowed Philip as well, following him from childhood in England, to adulthood in Germany, adventures in Paris, and back to a village on the British coast. Together with Philip, we were drawn into a world of cynicism, passion, hatred, and the yearning to become someone greater. In the beginning, innocence reigned. As a little boy who was just orphaned, Philip took everything in, not comprehending his situation. There was simplicity in his thoughts and naivete in his actions. He soon developed self-consciousness about his clubbed-foot, however, when he was sent to an all boys school. He was endlessly humiliated by his fellow classmates and was treated differently by the teachers. When he did something wrong, the teacher would not cane Philip like he would any other wrong doer because Philip was a cripple. Having suffered years of shame and loneliness, Philip was truly grateful to finally make a friend. Rose was very popular with the boys. He was outgoing and whimsical, and Philip was honored to have Rose treat him as a normal person. There comes a time, unfortunately, in many friendships when one of the people involved becomes possessive. Philip became jealous of Roses...

Transportation Security Administration Research Paper
Transportation Security Administration - Research Paper Example The agencyââ¬â¢s duties and responsibilities have necessitated the need to bring together various employees prior to the specific activity integral to all the activities that the agency undertakes. These are: Transportation Security Officers and Inspectors, National Explosives Detection Canine teams, Federal Air Marshals and VIPR teams (Balog, 2007). Airport inspector turnover is a persistent problem that the TSA has had to deal with. Year in year out, inspector turnover has affected performance and discharge of security measures in many airports of the US. There has been an observed persistent pattern of screenersââ¬â¢ turnover, resulting in delayed screening procedures in many US airports. This problem alongside that of selecting and training TSA inspectors can be addressed from the point of view of a criminal justice administrator. In addressing this issue in this perspective, TSA airport inspector turnover can be reduced in a number of ways, among them: Tracing the root cau se of the problem Managing the turnover experienced in the TSA is a positive move by the management in the recent past. However, in addressing this problem, it is fundamental to trace the path from which this problem emerged. The system outlays a clear form of activity coordination between and among all the departments under the TSA. Inspector turnover is not just an issue that emerged out of the blues. The activities, duty and responsibility discharge by these inspectors must have been challenged at some point, resulting in this problem. It is ascertained that the TSA inspector turnover is the highest compared to other security agencies in the US (Steve, 2010). Once the root cause of the problem has been identified, then other prospects in regard to reducing this turnover can be pursued. Policy formulation and implementation Employment and work policies that are currently in place have not fully met employee welfare. This is evidenced by the consistent efforts to improve salaries a nd work duties of TSA employees, especially the inspectors (Welch, 2010). The turnover has been accelerated by lack of employee-work functionality and operation management systems. These systems should be designed and put in place to oversee employer-employee conduct in the line of duty and responsibility. Putting these systems in place would ensure that instead of inspector turnover being persistent; the arising issues that result in the turnover are addressed, thus reducing turnover numbers through the set system. Policies that are tailored towards aiding this process should be well formulated and implemented for the benefit of all stakeholders in the public transport sector, TSA included. Monitoring of the TSAââ¬â¢s office Many TSA inspectors have termed the TSA office as ineffective and inefficient. They claim that at various instances the office fails to give proper information about specific duties and responsibilities of the inspectors. Once hired, the inspectors have foun d the terms, requirements, duties and responsibilities to not meet their expectations. As a result, many inspectors have quit their jobs. On the same note, terms of employment are not clear, making some employees to go long as part-timers before they are permanently employed. Even on part-time employment basis, shifts of work keep varying, making these part-timers fixed to this job with no opportunity to do
